Preparations

Setting up the vehicle for a tire change.

1. Move car to safe and even ground.

If you are changing a tire near oncoming traffic, move the car onto a wide shoulder of the road. Turn the car's hazard lights on.

Park the car on level ground if able to prevent the car from rolling when changing tires.

2. Apply parking brakes.

First shift the car into neutral, and slowly let go of the brake. This may cause the car to roll forwards or backwards depending on the level of the ground.

Then, slowly raise the parking brake until the car comes to a full stop. This will reduce the strain of the transmission on the wheels, preventing the car from rolling when in park on uneven ground.

3. (Optional): Add wheel wedges.

If you have wheel wedges, insert them at the opposite ends of the car where the tire is being changed.

For example, if you are changing a rear tire, place the wheel wedges behind the two tires at the front of the vehicle, and vice versa.

4. Remove hubcaps.

If your car tire has hubcaps, or a cover on the wheel rim that covers the lug nuts, remove it.
